Totally took out a cement block mailbox with re-barb before flipping it into the canal too. He got a decent gash on his head & will be okay. He was so close to home, lives right around the corner. Had he only waited to text..

Using a cell phone while driving in NZ is illegal for this very reason. He's lucky he got out of this with nothing more serious than a head gash.

BettyFrance~ That's how I felt looking at it. There is a foot of water or more in parts of it around where the car was. He kicked out the back window to crawl out. He's lucky that last tropical wave was not any wetter.

These phones have become a menace to society. People can't seem to wait 5 minutes before the 'communicate' with someone. crazy! Glad the young man was not badly hurt and the lesson was learned.

Yep, not surprised. I live near Eau Gallie and I see a lot of phone antics among motorists. Bluetooth or else get fined for phone on the ear and texting. This should be THE LAW in Florida! In NY you get fined caught yacking on the phone and driving. That photo is well worth a thousand words.

I know this won't be a popular view but it's just Darwin working on the planet over population and I say they can have these people. Like who doesn't know this is wrong and everyone knows 80% of all major accidents happen within 6 miles of home if they have ever read a newspaper or a relevant magazine of any sort.People of this type should profess that they are happy to pay the price for the life that they willingly choose whatever the cost

Excellent shot! The penalties we pay for our seemingly never-ending quest for instant gratification -- can't wait even a second. We are free to make choices -- not free to choose the results of those choices. I wonder how folks survived before cell phones and texting -- oh wait: We DID! Congrats on the VIP!!!

Illegal here in Idaho, too ...but the law seems to apply to everyone but the guy/gal in the car beside me.....

Good capture. Texting while driving & being blindfolded while driving are very much alike; who would even do it? ...I guess we know the answer - its just crazy.

Sad thing is, a texting driver will go by and think, I wonder what happened there. Most don't have a clue until either they are in an accident or cause one. Stupid stupid idiots. I see it all the time. It's illegal up here in Ontario but they still do it. The fines and penalities are not enough to deter them.

They recently made texting while driving illegal in New York and the state is collecting a fortune in fines but people keep doing it. To quote Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as stupid does."

Thanks for Sharing this message. Sec. LaHood and the Dept of Transportation are fighting this problem with considerable effort. In this case the possible injuries were to the guilty party but far to often, innocent folks are involved. Like drunk driving, we have to get this under control. Make a special effort to teach your teens or anyone you know that the text and Heaven can wait.

MOTOSpeak, you can get it for any Android phone. It is simple, buy a qualifying Motorola Bluetooth Headset, get the app on your phone. Then you can text people and drive by using your voice. You can also have the incoming texts read to you. Just like firearms, cell phones aren't the problem; it is the people using those tools incorrectly that is the problem.

Glad he learned his lesson with only a gash and a ruined car to show for it. Hopefully it will send a message (NOT text!) to others about taking driving seriously.

Glad no one else was hurt.

Sadly, it's often the innocents who get hurt while the perpetrator (stupid idiot) gets off with often less than a scratch.

So glad no one was hurt. The mailbox was the only one to get seriously injured. LOL :) Glad the guy is okay. Texting is a waste of time, and gets people killed or hurt. I have never texted in my life, and probably never will. Thank God!
